back to Ushuaia! 🇦🇶🇦🇷

Updated: Oct 26

Never expected to be back here so soon .. Almost exactly a year ago…

Living in Ushuaia for six months due to eye issue was like an adventure - living like a local: daily routine of gym, writing, programming ... friends, drinking, dancing until 4am (rinse and repeat) 😂

‘Fin del mundo’ again - End of the World ... but the beginning of an expedition into deep Antarctica, south of the Antarctic circle ️ to walk on this frozen corner of the planet: the 7th continent! 🌎

BIENVENIDOS de nuevo a Ushiaia! Argentina!!!

The history of Ushuaia, Argentina

is quite fascinating. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Yamana people...

The region saw significant changes with the arrival of European explorers and settlers along with their culinary traditions (booze and seafood🦞) 😂

In the 16th century, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan navigated the waters of the Beagle Channel, passing through what is now Ushuaia. However, it wasn't until the 19th century that Ushuaia's modern history began to take shape.

In the late 1800s, Ushuaia became a strategic location for Argentina due to its proximity to the Beagle Channel and its potential for a naval base. Argentina established a penal colony in Ushuaia in 1896, known as the Ushuaia Penitentiary. The prisoners, mainly hardened criminals, were tasked with building infrastructure in the area, including roads and buildings. The penitentiary was closed in 1947, but its remains can still be visited as part of the Maritime Museum.

During the early 20th century, Ushuaia experienced a surge in population and economic development. The growth was driven by activities such as sheep farming, mining, and logging. Ushuaia also served as a base for missionary work among the indigenous population.

In the 1970s, Ushuaia began to transition from a remote outpost to a tourist destination. The opening of the nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park in 1960, coupled with the completion of the Pan-American Highway in 1978, brought increased accessibility and visitors to the region.

Today, Ushuaia is known as the southernmost city in the world and serves as a gateway for Antarctic expeditions. It has evolved into a popular tourist destination, offering stunning natural landscapes, outdoor activities, and a glimpse into the rich history of the region.

Ushuaia's history as a former penal colony, combined with its breathtaking surroundings, make it a unique destination that attracts travelers from around the globe.
